GAA 125th Anniversary Celebration This Weekend PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 21 June 2009 21:48

[GAA 125th Anniversary Logo] One hundred and twenty-five years ago, a group of men met in a hotel in Thurles, Co. Tipperary, to divine a way to preserve Irish language and culture in the face of emigration, poverty and outside influences.  From that meeting emerged the Gaelic Athletic Association. Within months, hurling and football clubs sprang up around the country.  As the Irish spread across the globe, so too did their sports and with them, the GAA.  Since 1988, the Washington, D.C. Gaels have been proud to carry on that tradition, and can boast of being the only club in North America to win titles in hurling, camogie and men's and women's football.

This anniversary year finds the history of the GAA being celebrated by clubs around the world.  For our part, the Gaels are proud to host a day of Gaelic games on Saturday, June 27th at Georgetown Preparatory School in Bethesda, MD.  The day-long event will be highlighted a by a ladies' football tournament, featuring Thurles-Sarsfields, one of the oldest clubs in Ireland, from the birthplace of the GAA.

Teams from Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York, Thurles, and Washington, D.C. will be participating in the day's games.  In addition to the ladies' football, a hurling match between the Gaels and their old rivals the Philadelphia Shamrocks (2008 North American Jr. A Champions) will take place. There will also be demos of camogie and youth football.

Admission to the event will be free.  We hope you will be able to join us for this celebration of Irish culture!

Gaels Volunteer at Road Race Supporting Special Olympics D.C. PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 20 March 2009 12:08

Members of all four of the D.C. Gaels teams braved the cold and the rain to volunteer their time at the 21st Annual St. Patrick’s Day 8K, on March 15th.  Members from the club assisted with packet pick-up and held a Gaelic sports exhibition in support of the race, which raises money for Special Olympics D.C. Players from the hurling, camogie and two Gaelic football teams handed out race bibs and T-shirts on the Friday and Saturday preceding the race at the historic Old Post Office Building on Pennsylvania Ave. and spread information about Gaelic games.

On race day, the D.C. Gaels had representatives from each of the four club teams running in the 8k, to help celebrate athletics and Irish culture. After the race, the D.C. Gaels gave runners a hands-on introduction to the Gaelic games by giving race participants a chance to try the fundamental skills of picking the ball or sliotar off the ground, soloing, passing and scoring. Though exhausted from their run and eager to get out of the wet and cold, runners young and old tried their hand at Gaelic football, hurling and camogie and signed up to learn more about the Gaelic games.  The D.C. Gaels also held a small exhibition match in front of spectators to give runners a feel for the game.
