On February 17th, the Washington D.C. Gaels, in collaboration with Solas Nua and the Irish theatre company The Performance Corporation, performed an espresso theatre piece in the heart of downtown Washington D.C. GAA players and actors came together for a theatrical version of hurling in front of unsuspecting bystanders during the lunch hour at Farragut Square. The event, purposely staged one month before St. Patrick's Day, aimed to draw attention to Gaelic sports and Irish culture in the United States. The event was a great success, in terms of collaboration and media coverage - it was even filmed by Irish news channel RTE! A special thanks to everyone who participated - the show would not have gone on without you! Please share these links with your friends and family to spread the love for Irish sports! Here is a link to RTE news in Ireland, which covered the event:http://www.rte.ie/news/2010/0218/washington.html

Check out our very own Chair, Nora Reilly, and Development Officer, Mary Beth Ginder, on www.gaelicsportscast.com! Website founder, Denis O'Brien interviews both about the development of Gaelic sports in the D.C. Metro area and the great accomplishments of the club. Irish emigration levels to Washington, D.C., hasn't been as high as other major US cities and as a result Gaelic games in the country's capitol have been slow in getting started. Nevertheless, the Washington, D.C. Gaels have made steady progress over the past two decades in bringing the games to a young breed of American athletes, who find that Gaelic football, hurling and Camogie are exciting and exhilarating new sports. Club Chairperson, Nora Reilly, a native of Liverpool in England, and Development Officer, American player Mary Beth Ginder, today speaks to GaelicSportsCast about their recent recruiting drive and some of their fine achievements on the field. |

The NACB Championship weekend got off to a rousing start for the D.C. Gaels as they defeated Indianapolis 5-12 to 4-2, in the first Jr. C hurling match of the day
The pace was fast from the beginning, though occasionally slowed by muddy conditions on one end of the field, brought on by more than the morning dew. Half-forward Shawn Lavelle led the way with his feet, as he kicked in a first-half goal. The Gaels led at halftime, and didn't let off the throttle in the second half, to put a quick end to any thoughts of a Hoosier rally. Thomas Kinealy scored 1-1, Justin "Lazer" Golden added another, and Lavelle poured in two more goals as well as a point. Terence Kane was a constant thorn in the side of the Indianapolis fullbacks, using his speed to make slashing attacks on goal and tallied two points. Mike Pleszkoch also chipped in a couple points, moving up from the defense, and Paul McGreevy proved to be a reliable force, as he converted six of seven free chances.
Next up for the Gaels is a semifinal match against the Allentown Hibernians, who advanced after beating Concord, NH's Barley House Wolves. Game time is 1:30 PM. Kane 0-2 (sub Dolphin) Golden 1-0
Kinealy 1-1 D. Barry Lavelle 3-1 Mulrow O'Mahoney (sub Conlin) Pleszkoch 0-2 McGreevy 0-6 Corrigan Sullivan K. Barry Kingston |

Saturday proved to be a mixed bag for the Gaels, but half of the teams playing advanced to Sunday's finals. Jr B Hurling defeated Denver in a cracking match with Terence Kane knocking in the deciding goal late in the second half. D.C. prevailed 3-18 to 5-10. The Gaels will face Seattle for the championship Sunday morning. Jr C Hurling was forced to forfeit their match against Allentown, as most of the players had to be promoted to B, after a Friday night schedule change. Men's Football defeated Denver 4-18 to 3-10 and will play Austin for the title. Ladies' Intermediate Football lost a very disappointing match to San Francisco Saoirse, 1-8, 1-2 Camogie toppled Milwaukee for the Junior Camogie Championship, 3-2 to 0-2

JUNIOR "B" HURLING With Milwaukee moving up to junior "A" the race for "B" honors is wide open with teams competing from Indianapolis, Minnesota Twin Cities, Denver, Seattle and Washington DC. The Washington Gaels who lost to Milwaukee in last years final hope to reach the final again this year and will be anxious to regain the title they last won in 2006. Indianapolis, who won the "C" championship last year are expected to be strong challengers. Quarter-final Indianapolis Vs Minnesota Twin Cities Semi-finals Washington DC Vs Denver Seattle Vs Indianapolis or Twin cities
JUNIOR "C" HURLING This competition with 11 teams competing is by far the biggest championship on the playoff schedule and promises to be the most competitive. While trying to predict a winner in this championship is very difficult, Chicago Cusacks may be the frontrunner having put up a great challenge against Indianapolis in last years final. New team in the competition this year is San Francisco Rovers and playing for the second consecutive year are the Barleyhounds from Concord, New Hampshire and a team from Allentown PA. Also in the competition are Denver, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Seattle and Washington DC, Pittsburgh and Portland. Indianapolis Vs Washington, DC Milwaukee Vs San Francisco Rovers Chicago Cusacks Vs Pittsburgh Three Rivers Strikers Denver Vs Seattle N.H. Barley House Wolves Vs Allentown Hibernians Portland Vs Denver or Seattle
MEN'S JUNIOR "C" FOOTBALL The junior ‘C" division which was started in 2003 contributed to the ongoing promotion of Gaelic football for American born players over age for the youth program. With an NACB rule in place that only American born players could play in this C championship in the four major cities several hundred American born players contributed to the formation of new teams in Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia and San Francisco. However, a rule change this year that prohibits Irish sanction player from playing with any team resulted in the junior "C" competition being split into two divisions, 1) with sanctions, 2) without sanctions. Just 2 teams, Boston and Philadelphia, will compete in the "no-sanction" division while there will be two semi-finals in the "with sanctions" division with the following draw: Washington DC Vs Denver and San Diego Vs Austin. Semi-finals Wasington DC Vs Denver San Diego Setanta Vs Austin LADIES INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL
This is the second year of staging the intermediate championship. San Francisco Fog City Harps won the inaugural championship with a victory over Boston Tir Na Nog. Similar to last year just two teams, but different opponents, San Francisco Saoirse and Washington DC Gaels will compete for the title this year. Final San Francisco Saoirse Vs Washington DC Gaels
JUNIOR CAMOGIE At the moment Washington DC Gaels and Milwaukee are the only teams competing for the junior championship. Final Washington DC Vs Milwaukee
